2015 Year in Review

It doesn't seem possible, yet the 2015 golf season has reached it's end.  A season that saw a cool and soggy spring turned the corner with a fabulous summer and fall.

Hats off to our superintendent, Ash Gough and his entire crew for providing pristine course conditions.  We are blessed to have such a beautiful place to play.  As you visit other area courses, it is easy to feel pride for what we have...  A beautiful golf course with great people!

The time has come to name our 2015 Most Improved Players.  Let's start with our Ladies.

This player lowered her index from 17.3 to 12.5.  She had strong finishes in the Opening Tournament and Member-Guest.  She recorded victories in both the Spring and Fall Member-Member.  However,  the highlight of her season was a one shot victory in the Ladies Club Championship.  Congratulations to Grace Grosso, our Most Improved Female Player.

Entering the season healthy and pain free proved to be a recipe for success for our Most Improved Male Player.  This player was sidelined most of 2014 rehabbing a surgically repaired hip.  In 2015, he burst into the single digits dropping his index from 12.6 to 6.7.   He had many strong Weekend Sweeps finishes and had his regular group mumbling to themselves on many occasions as they left the 18th green defeated.  The highlight of his season was winning an extremely competitive flight in the Spring Member-Member and then capping it off with a dramatic chip in to win the Shoot-Out.  Congratulations to our Most Improved Male Player, Justin Silvia.

A definite membership perk is having the opportunity to compete in various club events.  Putting your skills to the test is good for your game and helps to point out areas that need improvement.  No better way to do this than competing in a Club Championship.

Our Senior Championship is always highly contested often coming down to the last putt.  No stranger to the winner's circle, Gregg Bilyeu turned the tables on first round leader Steve McCall erasing a four shot deficit early in Round 2.  Gregg's steady play continued on the back nine to hold off a talented field in securing a narrow two shot victory.

On paper, the 2015 Ladies Championship looked totally up for grabs and after Round 1 it was clear that the numbers didn't lie.  Perennial contender, JoAnn Shupe held a slim one shot advantage over Sher Schweitzer and Grace Grosso.  The trio slugged it out all day in Round 2.  In the end, it was a birdie on #17 that gave Grace Grosso the edge and the title.

Our most talented players take center stage in our Men's Club Championship.  Beaver Meadows has many strong players which soak the leader boards year after year in local amateur competitions.  However, no event means more to these players than their own Club Championship. After Round 1, it was Dave Hanson taming  the tough conditions and opening up a 3 shot edge over the ever consistent Terry Marris.  Dave stretched his lead through 27 holes and cruised to a seven shot victory over Brian Evans and Mal Reardon.

With their strong finishes; Hanson,Marris,Evans and Reardon earned the right to represent our club in the SDGA Interclub Championship held at Beaver Meadows.  Represent they did, winning the event by 4 strokes.  For Marris, it was icing on the cake coming off of his Audi Memorial Senior Championship a month prior.

2015 has been a great season.  The pro shop saw a record increase in sales thanks to the support of the membership.  The board has done a tremendous job improving the aesthetics of the clubhouse and surrounding areas giving us a facility of which to be proud.

Thank you to Duncan Ironside and his crew for providing a highly functional Food & Beverage operation.  Duncan is a pleasure to work with and continually performs past expectation.

Also, thank you to our Assistant Professional, Ryan Reynolds for his hard work and dedication to Beaver Meadows.  Ryan continues to progress through the PGA Apprentice Program and has a bright future ahead of him in the golf industry.

Through strong leadership and hard work, Beaver Meadows has survived when other clubs have failed.  Our membership is stable and our club has a great reputation.   I am proud to be associated with Beaver Meadows and am looking forward to the 2016 season.

Have a great winter!
